Prelude |
In an opera the prelude is that which precedes and sets the atmosphere or tone of the “oeuvre” that the viewers are about to witness.
A prelude also reveals the tempo and character of the elements which will take part in the rest of the event. The paintings from PRELUDE are the first ones produced for this exhibition and they are an aspiration to encounter the spirit of Eudaemonia or this balanced state of wellbeing within my artistic practice. Eudaemonia unfolds in three methodologies presented in three parts. Each one of these methodologies relates to different dimensions of spirituality and relationship to the sacred. Superstitions, popular, pagan and religious beliefs are divided not by their original tradition’s location or timeframe but rather by the very ‘psycho-technologies” and processes that ancient cultures developed in order to live a deeper and more prosperous existence First Act: Lucky Charms? Relates to ancient forms of popular belief, a shamanic and animistic relationship with animals, reading and trusting animal symbolism to receive blessings from them. Second Act: 7+ Virtues, Relates to aspiration, focuses on how the cultivation of particular conducts and ways to engage with desire were and still are relevant for the development of a meaningful life. Third Act: Crazy Wisdom Heroes, The most profound and skilled of all the methodologies. These fictional, mythological or historical heroes try to go beyond mere aspiration and blessings. Crazy Wisdom transgresses all norms, entering into a deep relationship with our deepest desires. Seven paintings in lighter colour and powdery white backgrounds form the prelude. These early paintings are more literal and graphic, they use a language closer to story telling and perhaps are more innocent and less crude. The content of these works hints at the beginning of an inner journey and how the rest of the works will develop. |
